Adam Drury picks the ball up in the left hand corner of the field and waits for support. Aidy White arrives and Drury feeds the ball back to him. Level with the area, White looks up and spots an unmarked player, he hesitates with the pass as he knows Michael Brown is more than likely to balloon this into the Kop. However, White overcomes these worries and knocks it to Brown, Tommy Lee in the Chesterfield goal mentally prepares for a goal kick. Brown collects the ball, 25 yards out and has options either side of him to pass to. Michael Brown does not pass. He draws the defender expertly before firing a rocket halfway up the side netting past a stunned Tommy Lee.
That was the moment that changed the game as Leeds were again forced to come from a goal down after Eoin Doyle scored a free header after good work from Drew Talbot down the right hand side. Leeds had started the brightest but lost their way through the first half and Brown's strike eventually got the team and the crowd of over 17,000 going. Only four minutes after Brown had struck, Aidy White, again playing in the more advanced role, nipped in front of a Chesterfield midfielder to feed a ball into Dominic Poleon. Poleon rolled his man well before crashing the ball home to give United the lead. Chesterfield soon came back and Tendayi Darikwa skipped past Paddy Kenny, who was making his 600th career appearance, before sliding the ball towards an empty Leeds net. However, Jason Pearce, who played well against Brighton, covered exeptionally to clear off the line.
Leeds gradually asserted themselves into the game and looked the better team after the introduction of Luke Murphy and Ross McCormack. Murphy, Smith and McCormack all had close chances to score, which would've probably seen the introduction of Alex Mowatt, making the bench for the first time after an impressive pre season with the under 21s. However, it wasn't to be and Chesterfield nearly forced extra time after Nathan Smith worked some space on the edge of the area before striking the base of Paddy Kenny's left hand post with seconds left on the clock. There was still just enough time for Tommy Lee to foul Poleon and despite the Leeds fans appealing for the Spireites 'keeper to be sent off, Boyeson only produced a yellow card.
All in all, Leeds made hard work of it in the end, but the important thing, as McDermott said, was that Leeds weren't an upset. Positive signs were there, in Alex Mowatt making the bench, Poleon scoring again (despite his naff dancing) and Aidy White again impressed at the tip of the diamond. Post match, McDermott outlined his transfer plans as he commented on the youthfulness of Jason Pearce and Tom Lees, something which makes Leeds' reported interest in Scott Wootton a bit more unlikely.
